Props to CCY.
“But, I’m not dead yet!”
The details of ADV’s demise had been greatly exaggerated. Sure, they were dealt a lethal blow with the Sojitz debacle, and for awhile there it didn’t look like they’d recover.
Then came the Clannad announcement.
Whether it sucks or not, forum-goers were excited, and attitudes towards ADV shifted. Suddenly things were looking up.
Subsequent solicitations showed an ADV Films diving deep into its back catalog for some long overdue (and some not so overdue) re-releases. The most awesome one of all was the Mazinkaiser/Shuten Doji double-pack! Four discs of Go Nagai material. I say thee nay! to the fuckers trying to get $50+ out of me for a used copy of Mazinkaiser volume 1 (I only have volume 2). For once my stubbornness actually paid off.
Then there’s the never-released-on-DVD titles like Guy: Double Target and Legend of Lyon: Flare under the sneakily appropriate Happy Carrot label. Oh, and let’s not forget a most welcome (and surprising) announcement of license acquisitions for former Geneon properties such as Mahoromatic and Tsukihime to be released under Sentai Filmworks.
I hope they have another sale as great as the Thanksgiving weekend one, where I snagged a copy of Robotech: Protoculture Collection for $35! If it sucks, so what? I got a box set that retails for $70-$120 for way less.
