FUNimation’s Fanservice
As I understand it, FUNimation started their Viridian Collections as a means to “go green” and be environmentally friendly, which is something that more companies should start considering.
The collection consists of a binder-like package where each “page” has a single slot for each disc in the collection, and this fit in a sleeve (I think. I actually have one but haven’t opened it yet, but I did see one in a used store once.). Apparently, fans were not happy with this packaging, and frankly, I can understand. It’s flimsy, and the slots wee known to scuff and scratch the discs.
FUNimation heard the fans’ complaints and introduced a different version of the Viridian Collection – a thin box that housed multiple slimline cases – a dramatic improvement. The introduction of the new packaging started with the Burst Angel Viridian Collection, and previously released VC titles, are gradually being re-released with the newer, nicer packaging.
When it was announced that FUNimation would rescue the Sojitz titles formerly being produced by ADV Films, fans rejoiced. But, worry set in when no announcement about the missing volumes of series (Red Garden, Pumpkin Scissors, Welcome to the NHK) was forthcoming. Then came the solicitations for “half season” sets. Fan reaction was hostile, to say the least. The backslash and email campaign seemed to have turned the tide, and FUNimation announced the sixth volume of Red Garden, Pumpkin Scissors, and Welcome to the NHK would be available in limited qualities.
Fans rejoiced, and I was one of them. I had just bought up the singles and artboxes for Red Garden and Welcome to the NHK before I found out that ADV lost the titles. Hopefully, my pre-ordered copies will be shipping soon (they’re due out Dec. 30th).
