What is reality?
This is the question Kyo asks himself after encountering a mysterious girl (that only he saw) who drags him into battle against some faceless robotic foes.
Kyo takes to piloting his mech, the Zegapain Altair, like a pro after being told to “think of it as a virtual reality game.” And he takes this advice to heart, assuming everything he’s doing for Cerebrum (the group of soldiers/pilots Kyo encounters) is just part of the game.
He learns it’s not a game the hard way, when a mission to rescue the Shanghai server comes up unsuccessful. Two of the girls are from Shanghai and obviously had a lot riding on the recovery of this server, but Kyo is left wondering why they’re so sad. It’s just a game, right?
The CGI mech design isn’t bad, and there’s some cool action sequences, even if they do get recycled a few times. None of the characters really stand out as favorites just yet, but there’s plenty of mystery and intrigue in this show to warrant continuing with the next volume.
Mecha fans will want to give this a shot, but other anime fans may want to skip it and find something else more to their liking.
