**PICK OF THE WEEK**
Blackest Night #1
DC Comics / $3.99
Finally, it has arrived, and the anticipation didn’t kill it! Halfway through this issue I knew it would be my pick of the week, and apparently I’m not the only one who thought so. Last time I checked 97% of the iFanboy users had chosen this as their Pick of the Week, too.
Geoff Johns sweeps us into what is essentially a science fiction-horror comic by using a slow build. He starts with the anniversary of Superman’s death, which after his resurrection, became a national holiday to honor all of the fallen heroes. We get a glimpse of various memorials across the country. Even the Rogues gather for remembering their fallen. All of this is there for newer readers who need a little Cliff’s Notes version of what’s been going on in the DCU.
About halfway through, the book finally hits its boiling point, and Scar reveals her true intentions to the Guardians just as they’ve realized what a mistake they made. I won’t say anymore. This book really needs to be experienced without spoilers. Highly recommended.
Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #1
DC Comics / $3.99
This issue takes a look at three different characters from three different Corps.
The first story features Saint Walker, and how it was the blue ring of hope found him. You get a look at his life and how strong his faith is. Still, I wonder what his final fate will be at the hands of Larfleeze and his orange constructs.
The second story focuses on Mongul Jr. long before his father died and he ever heard of the Sinestro Corps. Even from an early age, this little bastard wanted to conquer and kill. “The apples don’t fall far from the tree,” and all that…
The third, and final, story this issue gives us our first glimpse of the Indigo Tribe. The speak in a series of strange words like ‘nok’, ‘klek’, etc. Even the Green Lantern ring cannot translate these sounds. Really, I have no idea what the true meaning of the story was.
This issue is skippable.
Justice League: Cry for Justice #1
DC Comics / $3.99
Like almost every other review of this book, I could’ve done without the constant hammering of “justice” throughout the book. Otherwise, it was entertaining, and Cascioli’s art is fantastic. I will probably wait until the trade is available rather than complete this mini series.
Buck Rogers #2
Dynamite Entertainment / $2.99
As a fan of the old TV show, I am really enjoying the hell out of this book. I love how you are just dropped right into the middle of things and forced to learn as you go, just like Buck.
In this issue, Buck and Wilma must escape a slaughter ship (for human meat, I think), and try to make there way back to safe territory.
There’s also a glimpse of the events leading up to Buck’s being lost in time. He left an ex-girlfriend officer behind, whom I’m sure was going to tell him she was pregnant just before he hopped into the cockpit, but he gave her one of those “we’ll talk when I get back” lines.
It’s a fun book, with good art. I recommend you check it out.
I picked up a couple more books, but I haven’t had a chance to read them yet. That’ll just be fodder for a future installment of The Longbox Chronicles.
