I made a couple stops Friday night, and managed to pick up some cool figures.
At Toys ‘R Us I found a Marvel Universe 3.75″ Ms. Marvel (modern), Iron Man 2020/Deathlok Superhero Squad pack, and I snagged a McFarlane Toys Man of Miracles for just over $3. Not a bad haul.
Then, at Target I found the Iceman (comic book version) 3.75″ X-Men Origins Wolverine figure as well as the new G.I.Joe Rise of Cobra toys. Being the colossal geek that I am, I absolutely had to snag a Snake Eyes and a Storm Shadow. Naturally, I couldn’t resist opening them, so here’s a quick review…
Overall, the packaging is nice. It’s similar to the classic Joe figures, but modernized for the film-going audience. There are file cards on the back, but they aren’t anywhere as in-depth as they are on previous Joe figures. So, let’s take a look at the figures themselves.
Snake Eyes
This is classic Snake Eyes all the way. He’s nicely sculpted with fine detailing. I’d prefer he didn’t have the mouth molded into his mask, and the visor sculpted to his head rather than attached like it’s movable. It does move, but mine seems to have such a limited range of movement, I wonder if too much pressure would snap it right off.
Speaking of snapping things off, his left arm was so tight at the elbow joint, that I thought it might’ve been sealed by paint. It took a few minutes, but I was finally able to get the arm to bend properly without snapping it off.
Accessories include a katana, uzi, large backpack, display stand, and a spring-loaded missile launching rappel line. There is a hole in his back for the backpack, but the over the shoulder strap prevents it from fitting snugly. I’d rate him a 3 out of 5.
Storm Shadow
A lot of people are complaining about the overcoat costume design, but it doesn’t bother me so much. However, on the figure it’s made of a thick rubbery material with very little give and it restricts the figures leg movements. So, we end up with a ninja figure who won’t be doing much kicking.
The sculpting is well-done, and he’s even more detailed than Snake Eyes with lots of fabric wrinkles and folds. Unfortunately, the molding of his left hand left the grip opening too small for him to hold any of the weapons he comes with.
Accessories include a katana, wakizashi, handgun, ninja claws, nanite launching gun which I assume he uses in the movie, a spring-loaded disc launcher, and display stand. The handgun fits oddly into an empty holster on his belt, with the handle of the gun reaching the bottom of his ribcage. All in all, I’d also give him a 3 out of 5.
I might buy another pair to keep in the package, but we’ll see. I know there are a couple more Snake Eyes figures coming down the pike, so I might end up spending my money there.
Some of the vehicles look great, but they’re kind of pricey, especially the $99 Mobile Pit command base which opens to over 2 ft. tall! The newly designed Night Raven looks cool and makes me miss my old version when I was a kid. That was one of my best Christmas presents.
