I know a lot of people don’t like live albums, but I’ve never had any problems with them. As a matter of fact, some of my favorite CDs are live albums. Granted, there are a ton of studio manipulated live albums out there, but there are also plenty of legit, well-recorded ones, too. Plus, they’re kind of like greatest hits packages with newer recorded versions of the songs. But, this is supposed to be a “Cover Up” feature, so let’s talk about the cover.
Since Destruction made their triumphant return in 2000 with All Hell Breaks Loose, they’ve been showing off some kick ass, modern looking cover art. Five of their last eight covers featured some variation of the cracked skull theme, but 2005’s Inventor of Evil saw the return of the Mad Butcher (murdering a crowd member in the art above), for all intents and purposes, Destruction’s evil mascot (like Iron Maiden’s Eddie).
By taking what would be an adequate, but centered composition, and turning it on an angle, you get a more dynamic, interesting cover. Even the font choice and placement of the title is handled deftly, placing the emphasis on the right words and shrinking the articles. This is one of those images that would be worthy of staring at for hours in the enlarged LP format.
