Blackest Night #2
DC Comics / $3.99
This issue continues the battle between the Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter, and even escalates it to an “oh, shit” moment.
For whatever reason, it would score major points with the Atlantean population if Garth (Tempest) could bring Aquaman’s remains back under the sea. It’s some political crap, I guess. Regardless, Aquaman’s grave has already been disturbed by his walking corpse. That’s right, kiddies! Aquaman is now a Black Lantern, and he quickly proceeds to lay the smack down on his followers, Garth, and Mera. Luckily, Mera escapes (for now).
Deadman’s body also gets itself Black Lantern-ized, but for some reason, his spirit gets to continue experiencing a degree of independence from his decrepit form. See Blackest Night: Batman #1 for more on this.
All in all, this issue was just as compelling as the first. Ivan Reis’ art continues to kick ass on Geoff Johns’ script, and I can’t wait to see what happens next! Highly recommended.
Blackest Night: Batman #1
DC Comics / $2.99
Dick and Damian arrive at the Wayne gravesite shortly after the tussle between Hal, Barry, and J’onn J’onzz. Dick wants to have the remains moved to the Bat-bunker before anything else happens, but Damian gets kind of creeped out and is unable to wrap Bruce’s remains in his cape.
Back in the Batmobile, Dick gets a visit from Deadman, who is very surprised to discover Bruce is dead, Dick is Batman, etc. Damian naturally reacts negatively to Dick’s being possessed and forces the car off the road. Deadman switches bodies and gets everyone caught up and what’s been going on with the Black Lanterns.
In a panic, Dick races to the nearest cemetery only to discover that the Drakes (Tim’s parents) have been unearthed. Things are going to get icky next issue, that’s for sure.
I was pleasantly surprised by this issue. I had seen Ardian Syaf’s art before and wasn’t impressed, but this issue showed some immense improvements. This one’s definitely worth the price of admission. Recommended.
Green Lantern Corps #39
DC Comics / $2.99
Kyle and Guy meet up with Soranik and Iolande on the way back to Oa, but a swarm of black rings overcomes them and gets their before they can properly warn the other Lanterns, who are having trouble reaching the Guardians (probably because they’re most likely dead). The rings race through the crypt of long dead Lanterns, activating each one, and Kyle gets reunited with a loved one!
Meanwhile, Mongul asserts his dominance over Korugar, and renames the Sinestro Corps using his own name instead. You can bet Sinestro will not be happy about this (it’s his Corps, and his homeworld).
On Daxam, Arisia is chased off by one of the Daxamite supremacists who declares her help is no longer needed. It’s a damn shame Sodam Yat had to sacrifice his life for that planet full of racist bastards, who now have the powers of Superman thanks to him.
It’s a fast-paced issue, but well worth it. Recommended.
