The Longbox Chronicles: Trying to catch up

I’m at least three weeks behind in my new comic reading, and this batch of summaries/reviews is my first attempt at catching up. I’d hate to get caught in the same rut I was a couple of years ago. If that happens, I may as well give up the hobby altogether.

ASM603Amazing Spider-man #603
Marvel Comics / $2.99
The Chameleon steps into Peter’s life so he can complete a job that is supposed to cripple New York’s anti-terrorism department. In the process, he makes sweet sweet lovin’ with Peter’s roommate, scares off one of MJ’s stalkers, and “deals” with Harry. What this means, we won’t find out until next issue. Worth reading.

The Incredibles #4
Boom! Studios / $2.99
This issue wraps up the Family Matters mini series and paves the way for the ongoing, which may or may not be going on for very long considering Disney’s acquisition of Marvel. Then again, there’s been no news regarding the status of Boom!’s licensing deal since the Disney/Marvel news broke.

I’m not really sure what to do with this book. It’s entertaining, and I love Marcio’s art, but I’m still wondering if I should drop it. I think I’ll give the ongoing a few issues and see what happens there.

Power Girl #3
DC Comics / $2.99
The number one reason to buy this book is Amanda Connor’s art. It’s fun, expressive, and incredibly dynamic. Plus, you know the book’s going to be more than just T & A with a female artist of her caliber drawing it. Sadly, after three issues, the art alone just isn’t enough to keep me interested. I may have to drop this one.

Project Superpowers: Chapter 2 #2
Dynamite Entertainment / $2.99
I love the idea of this series, but one of its drawbacks is that there are just too damn many characters to keep track of, and it can get confusing from month to month. Plus, I’m not a huge fan of coloring straight over the pencils, especially when the pencils are as rough as they are in this issue. I’m starting to wonder if the quality isn’t diminishing from one issue to the next. I really wish Alex Ross were illustrating the interiors on this series instead of just the covers.

Project Superpowers: Meet the Bad Guys #1
Dynamite Entertainment / $2.99
This issue focuses on the Green Lama and his new nemesis, Bloodlust. While visually interesting, there’s not much of substance to this new villain. Sure, she’s the granddaughter of the Lama’s recently deceased servant, but there’s no real reason for all of the hate she feels towards him, at least that we’re given in this issue. Ultimately, she’s just another bloodthirsty murderer type.

blackest-night-supermanBlackest Night: Superman #1
DC Comics / $2.99
I’m sure after reading the previous entries, it’s starting to sound like I just don’t like comics that much. And there may be some truth to that these days. I’ve been feeling increasingly bored with what I’ve been buying, and I’ve been wondering if I should bother at all, anymore.

However, this issue kind of turned things around for me last night. I enjoyed the hell out of this book, just like I have all of the Blackest Night material so far.

Kal-L, the Earth-1 Superman is resurrected by a Black Lantern ring and goes on to terrorize Smallville, confronting Clark and Conner at Pa Kent’s grave, and basically giving them a beat down. Meanwhile, Black Lantern Lois Lane (also from Earth-1) attacks a defenseless Ma Kent. There’s some good smack-talking, and we get a glimpse of how Superman can embody all of the emotional spectrum at once. If you’re reading Blackest Night, but neglected to pick this up, I recommend you do so, as it was well worth it.
