31 Days of horror: Day 4 – His Name Was Jason

This one is also kind of a cheat, being that it’s a documentary, but it is a documentary of a series of horror films, so I’m using it. :p

His Name Was Jason – 30 Years of Friday the 13th is hosted by Tom Savini, the very same special effects and make up guru that worked on the first Friday the 13th film (as well as some of the George Romero flicks). The sets are dark, and Savini, with black wardrobe, often appears as a floating head delivering short, occasionally tongue in cheek monologues amidst recreations of some of Jason’s more historical kills.

Tom Sa-fuckin'-vini!

The interview footage is mostly what you’d expect from this kind of release. There’s nothing but fond memories and great experiences as the various cast and crew members reminisce about the good old days. Still, the excitement and positive attitude of the interviews combined with footage from the films made me want to go back and watch them all again. Most notably absent from these interviews are Kevin Bacon and Corey Feldman. Bacon, I can understand. He’s moved on to bigger and better things, but c’mon Feldog!

Verdict: See it. Amidst the fluff, there’s some good encyclopedic information about the series, and what went on behind the scenes.
