    I've blindly bought many, many DVDs in my time, but none have been more worth the gamble than Death Note. Positive buzz prompted me to pick up the first DVD, and I was glad I did. From the very beginning, Light's quest for a "perfect" world caught hold of my interest and hasn't let up since.

    Just like Fighting Spirit, Overman King Gainer was a DVD I took a chance on because it was super-cheap at the nearby Half Price Books. It took me a couple of tries before I finished the disc (I have a tendency to fall asleep when I watch DVDs in bed), but it was worth it. I enjoyed what I saw, and made it a point to continue the series when I could. Then Bandai released this super-thin Anime Legends Complete Collection.

    I was well aware that sports-themed anime and manga were popular in Japan, but they were something that never appealed to me, especially after I stopped following sports of any kind as I got older. But, a whimsical choice at one of the many Gamestop locations I ransacked for free DVDs (they were running a Buy 2, Get 4 Free promotion) changed all that. As a result fo the promotion, I picked up many DVDs I wouldn't have otherwise tried, figuring free is the best way to gamble on a new series. One of these gambles was the first volume of Fighting Spirit.

    As I understand it, FUNimation started their Viridian Collections as a means to "go green" and be environmentally friendly, which is something that more companies should start considering.

    The details of ADV's demise had been greatly exaggerated. Sure, they were dealt a lethal blow with the Sojitz debacle, and for awhile there it didn't look like they'd recover.
