    Long before I thought of myself as otaku, I was a fanboy (basically, an American version of otaku for comic books and related media). I have G.I.Joe to thank for that. Growing up in the 80s, I was inundated with a variety of action figures and the animated series they spawned, so it was only natural that I would discover the existence of G.I.Joe comic books. Hell, they actually had commercials on TV!
